Competition Winners Announced

This weekend, following a period of judging, the winners of our various competitions were announced. The process is a simple one; when our CAMRA branch members submit their chosen pubs for the Good Beer Guide, they are also asked to choose their Pub of the Year for Wolverhampton city area, Pub of the Year for our South Staffordshire area, and our Club of the Year.
The top pubs and clubs as recommended by our members are visited by a panel of volunteer judges, working to a CAMRA National judging criteria – the pubs with the highest total scores in their competitions are our winners.
For our Cider Pub of the Year, the process is a little different; a shortlist of pubs known to consistently sell real cider and perry is compiled by our Cider Officer and a scoring trail is undertaken, where several branch members visit and score cider pubs on availability of the product, knowledge and other criteria.
Remember, in these challenging times, our pubs need our support as much as ever, so as the nights get lighter and the weather warmer, please try to visit them as much as you can. I look forward to seeing you at the award presentations.”

Wolverhampton CAMRA branch chairman, Mark Hewitt, made the announcement via the branch newsletter, emailed out on a monthly basis:

“I am proud to announce to our members the winners of this year’s Wolverhampton CAMRA Pubs and Club of the Year competitions. Well-deserved congratulations to the winners and best of luck to them in the next stage of their respective CAMRA national competitions.

Congratulations to our winners for 2025!:

(Runner up: The Vine Inn Wednesfield)

Wolverhampton CAMRA South Staffordshire – Pub of the Year 2025:

(Runner up: Love & Liquor – Codsall)

Wolverhampton CAMRA – Club of the Year 2025:
The Firs Club, Codsall – Anna Reynolds
(Runner up – Penn Bowling & Social Club)

Wolverhampton CAMRA – Cider Pub of the Year 2025:
The Keg & Comfort Micropub, Oxley – Louise Clive
(Runner up – Hail to the Ale Micropub, Claregate)

Congratulations again to the pubs and clubs and all the licensees and staff involved. Each will now go forward to their relevant county/regional judging rounds and thank you to all the volunteer judges. Presentations have been arranged as follows, others will be announced in due course:

Saturday 26th April at 12:30pm – The Swan, Brewood (Wolverhampton CAMRA S. Staffs PotY)
Saturday 10th May at 4pm – Keg & Comfort, Oxley (Wolverhampton CAMRA City Pub and Cider Pub of the Year)
Saturday 24th May at 3pm – The Firs Club, Codsall (Club of the Year)

Interestingly, this is the very same line-up of winners we had two years ago in 2023, though the runners-up are for the most part different. For the Swan Hotel in Brewood, this is at least the second time they’ve won Wolverhampton’s South Staffordshire competition three times in a row, they last did the same in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
For the Keg & Comfort, this is the second time they have won our Wolverhampton city Pub of the Year and again, they’ve done so scooping the Cider Pub of the Year award at the same time. National Club of the Year 2024, The Firs Club, has won the branch competition again. All move on to the next round.

In the meantime, a reminder that our next branch meeting comes in the city centre on Thursday 4 April at 8pm at The Wheatsheaf, Market Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 3AE. The perfect time for branch members to say hello!
